You love your cat and want to make sure it eats the best and nutritious food. You might also want to give it treats once in a while and could be thinking about slipping it a morsel or two of the food you eat. However, few human foods should not be given to cats, as it is dangerous and toxic for them. Here are some of them listed below.

  • Chocolate
Chocolate is on the top of most lists of dangerous foods for both dogs and cats. This is because it contains methylxanthines, which can cause vomiting, high body temperature, abnormal heart rate, muscle tremor, increased thirst, diarrhea, and seizures. Milk and white chocolate are probably not as harmful as dark chocolate. However, you should avoid all chocolate to be on the safe side. This substance, methylxanthines, is also present in caffeinated beverages and, hence, you should avoid giving them to your cat too.
  • Milk
Surprising as it sounds, milk and dairy products such as cheese and cream are human foods for cats to avoid. Cats are unable to digest the lactose in milk, which can result in digestive issues such as diarrhea. However, some cats might not have any issues with digesting milk. Kittens should only be given their mother’s milk for a few weeks. If you have any doubts or queries, you can contact your vet for advice. Your vet would also suggest certain milk formulas that would provide your growing kitten with the nutrients it requires but would also be easy to digest.
  • Grapes and raisins
The ingestion of these foods by your cat can result in diarrhea, abdominal pain, lethargy, and vomiting. These symptoms would be exhibited 24 hours after consumption. It severe cases, kidney stones, and kidney failure can occur. Hence, it is advisable to keep these human foods for cats to avoid away from the reach of your curious pet.
  • Bread
This is another one of the human foods for cats to avoid. Although bread is not toxic or dangerous to cats, it has no nutritional value for them. You can give your cat bread once in a while, but it should not replace cat food.
  • Tuna
Too much tuna is not good for your cat, as, just like bread, it does not contain all the nutrients your cat requires. Also, too much tuna can cause mercury poisoning in your cat. You should also avoid giving your cat raw tuna as it could contain bacteria that cause E.coli or salmonella. These bacteria could not only cause diarrhea, vomiting, and lethargy but, in some cases, could also be fatal.

The digestive system of humans and animals are different. Hence, certain foods can be dangerous or toxic. You should be aware of the human foods for cats to avoid, and in case you do notice any abnormal behavior or digestive issues in your pet, contact your vet immediately.
